By outmatching all its competitors, 1984 Buick Grand National was a strong performer to produce quarter-mile times. The 1984 Grand National engine was a newly introduced 3.8 liters turbo V6 producing 200 horsepower. The engine power has exceeded 190 and 300 ft-lbs of torque, 240 pounds-ft of torque 305ci small block which used in the 1984 Camaro Z28. It was very close with the power 205, 290 pounds-ft of torque 350ci small block used by 1984 Corvette.

1987 Grand National GNX was the top of the line and it has reached 276 horsepower. The car was rapidly inducing fear and become very expensive. The GNX 1987 cost about $ 29,000, or almost double the standard price of a Grand National. General Motors was only able to sell 547 of these monsters.
